Can you actually get beach sand out of the pile, or is it there for good?

Most of it comes out, but only if the sand is pulled before we wet anything. Hermosa carpet carries the heaviest raw sand load we see, and it doesn't sit on the surface. It sifts down to the base of the pile where it grinds against the fibers every time someone walks on it. We dry-work the carpet hard first to lift that grit, then extract. If we skipped that step and went straight to hot water, we'd turn the sand into mud and push it deeper. Sand that has already abraded the fiber tips can't be undone, but the carpet will look and feel noticeably better and stop wearing as fast.

How long does carpet take to dry here with the marine layer?

Accepted Answer

Longer than inland, and we plan for it. The overcast can hang around into the afternoon for stretches of the year, and in winter it can sit all day, so ambient air isn't doing much for you. We extract more aggressively than we would somewhere dry and bring air movers, and we'll ask you to run the HVAC or a dehumidifier if you have one. On a top-floor bedroom with windows that get some sun and breeze, drying is quicker. In a ground-level unit or an interior stair run, expect it to take a while and plan not to put furniture back the same evening.

My carpet is only upstairs bedrooms and the stairs. Is that worth a service call?

Yes, and that's the majority of what we clean in Hermosa. Most of these three-story houses have hard surface at street level and carpet confined to the upper bedrooms and the stair runs between floors. The stairs are usually the worst of it, since every bit of sand tracked in the front door gets carried up on shoe soles and worked into the nosings. Small jobs are normal for us here. We'd rather clean a stair run and two bedrooms properly than talk you into square footage you don't have.

What does it cost, and what makes one job more than another?

The estimate is free and you get a firm number before we start. We don't adjust it partway through. What moves the price is how much carpet there actually is, how many stair flights, and the condition. Heavy sand loading takes more dry-side work up front. Red wine, food, and pet spills from a rental turnover are treated individually and add to the job. Access matters too. Narrow lots and tight side setbacks mean hoses run further, and a third-floor bedroom is more work than a first-floor one. We'll tell you what's affecting the number so nothing is a surprise.

Can you come the same day? I have a turnover between renters.

Often yes, and we get this request constantly here given how much of the housing is rented or listed short-term. Call in the morning and we can usually work a Hermosa job in that day, since the city is small and we're not driving far between stops. What we'll be honest about is drying. If you have guests checking in that evening, a same-day clean may not be dry in time, especially in winter or under a stubborn marine layer. If you tell us the check-in time when you call, we'll say plainly whether it's realistic or whether you're better off the day before.
